URBAN COASTAL ADAPTATION AS SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

2019 > URBAN PLANNER @ DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, OAKLAND, CA

Management Intern in the graduate-internship program at the Strategic Planning and Project Development division, City of Oakland Transportation Department.

  • Prepared coastal adaptation strategies: resiliency to sea-level rise and groundwater inundation.

  • Analyzed data, created maps and proposed an approach for prioritizing and spending the city’s recently enacted transportation impact fee fund. Implementing shared-mobility strategies.

  • Reviewed environmental impact reports (EIR) to adapt to groundwater emergence driven by sea- level rise. Incorporated it in the City Chief Resilience Officer’s plan .

  • Prepared images, renderings, informational flyers, and presentations to communicate bike and pedestrian projects and associated improvements in Oakland.

  • Worked alongside multidisciplinary teams in projects of a diverse program complexity and multiple scale.

  • Participated from early project phases applying normative and urbanistic regulations in favor of the design strategies for each project proposal, getting building permits on time.

  • Acquired empirical project management knowledge, such as communication with clients -in both private and public sectors- prioritizing their aspirations, getting timely feedback from external consultants, and synchronizing technical specialists.

  • Learned to communicate and coordinate with the different actors and stakeholders involved in the design architectural processes and subsequent construction contract, construction, and implementation phases.

  • Developed projects of varied programmatic nature, different scales, and spatial uses; e.g., institutional architecture projects including but not limited to schools, colleges/universities, multipurpose, commercial, and single/multi-family housing.

  • Designed and participated from the beginning in creative processes, relationships with clients, interactions with communities, coordination with specialists, preparation of documents for construction contracts, budget preparations, and construction supervision.
